Pulse Structural Monitoring to Supply Mooring Line Monitoring System for Maersk Oil's Culzean FSO Ailsa

HOUSTON, Sept. 28, 2017, Pulse Structural Monitoring Inc., an Acteon Company, has been awarded a contract by SOFEC, Inc. (SOFEC) for the design and supply of an Anchor Leg Monitoring System (ALMS) to monitor the integrity of the mooring lines on Maersk Oil's upcoming Culzean FSO Ailsa. The design and supply of the Internal Turret Mooring system are being carried out by SOFEC in cooperation with its parent company MODEC, Inc. which is delivering the FSO (Floating, Storage, and Offloading vessel) for Maersk Oil's Culzean field in the North Sea.

The ALMS, which is already approaching the factory acceptance testing (FAT) stage, will utilize the next iteration of Pulse’s wireless MOORASSURE™ platform which has been in use by major operators since 2009. The latest iteration represents a step change in mooring line monitoring system design and integrity management philosophy thanks in large part to SOFEC’s extensive experience in mooring system design and supply.

A strong emphasis is placed on wireless detection of line presence by sensing a significant and sustained change in mooring line profile and comparing it to the other mooring lines in the mooring group. Each mooring line will be outfitted with sensors from Pulse’s next generation INTEGRI™ range of wireless sensing products, which shall periodically measure depth and inclination. Since the position of the instrumentation along the line is well defined, the depth and inclination provides accurate feedback on the profile of the line and derived tension. If one of the lines shows a significant, sudden, and sustained deviation from the group behavior, this will trigger a warning or alarm.

Regarding the contract award, Joey Rodriguez, Business Development Manager at Pulse stated, “We are honored SOFEC chose Pulse to partner with on this exciting project. We look forward to making the industry a safer and more efficient place through the provision of new monitoring technologies. With the award of this contract, Pulse has solidified its position as the leading provider of wireless mooring monitoring solutions for the new-build, conversion, and in-service FPSO markets, having secured contracts for multiple major projects in the last two years”.
